What is Cashmere?

Cashmere is the down of the Capra Hircus goat, found at elevations of 14,000 feet and above in the high plateaus of Kashmir, Nepal and Inner Mongolia.  Temperatures here barely rise above minus 30 degrees Celsius in winter, but these goats produce fibres that protect them and keep them warm.  Cashmere is found on the goat’s underbelly, underneath the coarse outer hair.  It is harvested naturally and gently in spring when the goat naturally sheds.  Each goat only produces approx. 90 grams of cashmere each year, leading to it being christened ‘soft gold’ as it is precious and rare.

Why is cashmere expensive?

It is a rare commodity, like gold, and sold by the gram, just like gold.  The harsh geography where these goats thrive means there are a limited number of goat herds, and it takes 3-4 goats to make a standard cashmere sweater.  This makes it precious and therefore more expensive.

There are other reasons though why cashmere is so special.  It is light, soft and up to 8x warmer than other woollen fibres!  It also breathes so can be worn almost year round in our climate.  If, like me, you can’t wear wool next to your skin as it itches, cashmere is perfect and can be worn 24/7 as no irritating factors.

The soft, silky, warm attributes of cashmere also lend itself to creating beautiful garments that drape and sit beautifully, making them flattering, stylish and simply stunning.

Where does Modern Love Cashmere come from?

The world’s finest cashmere comes from northern China and Mongolia.  Our cashmere fibre comes from Inner Mongolia, from a supplier who meets our ethos of sustainable, ethical and traceable practices, holding the highest industry qualifications.  This ensures the care of the grasslands, animals and people in their communities.

It is then manufactured in Southeast China to the highest standards, with the team showcasing incredible workmanship, including some handstitching.

Are there different qualities or grades of cashmere?

Cashmere is available in several grades: A, B, C and so on.  We offer only the highest quality cashmere products made with Grade A cashmere.  This means the fibres are longer; 14-15.5 microns in diameter to ensure a finer garment.

Do you subscribe to ethical and sustainable practices as a company?

Yes, we endeavor to do so as much as possible, as this fits within our core ethos.  We source yarn from suppliers who have the highest industry standard qualifications, and are monitored regularly, and are always having conversations about what more can be done.  Garments tags, stationery, garments bags etc. are all recycled materials and our courier bags are compostable.

We also champion a slow fashion approach – quality over quantity.  Our garments are timeless and seasonless and, as cashmere can be worn year round, there is no need to be constantly releasing new styles as per other ‘fashion’ items.

How do I care for/store my cashmere?

Each Modern Love Cashmere purchase comes carefully packaged in it’s own eco cotton storage bag to keep it safe from any nasty bugs or larvae.  They love cashmere too!

When it comes to caring for your precious cashmere, there are a few steps to take:

  • The less it is washed the better, so try to wear a cami or light t-shirt underneath and use a change-cloth (scarf) when taking it on or off to avoid getting make-up on it.
  • Inbetween wears, give it an air then store in its bag.
  • Avoid wearing it with jewellery that may catch, leather belts, bags etc., anything that will rub against it. Seatbelts are another culprit.  This may cause pilling.
  • Some pilling will occur near any high friction areas, like underarms, sideseams etc., even with the best cashmere. Use a cashmere comb to gently tease these away.
  • Spot cleaning any wee spills is always best, and drycleaning can be used for any stubborn stains but gentle hand-washing is best. Please see our blog on cashmere care for indepth care tips.
  • A steaming machine (which I swear by for everything) is the best way to erase any wrinkles. If you don’t have one, place on the ironing board and direct a burst of steam from approx half an inch away onto your cashmere.  It doesn’t take much to get rid of any creases.
